A team of EPA workers caused a major spill of polluted water and toxic waste while working on a waste containment project at the Gold King Mine in Colorado. The team’s goal had been to take the polluted water, treat it and ultimately reduce the metal pollution entering into nearby Cement Creek.
The plug holding back the toxic waste was released, accidentally causing groundwater contamination not only in Cement Creek, but also traveling into the Animas River, a tributary of the San Juan River. For your next research paper in your environmental sciences class, consider discussing the contamination and its impact on the communities affected. Read more
